E14 - West Ham, Millwall or both
I was in the Ferry House pub on the Isle of Dogs yesterday and got speaking to a few locals (I was told I wasn't one!) about West Ham/Millwall and the island being mixed. Now when I was living locally (Mile End), anytime I went down there, it was always a mix of both, but the locals I got speaking to were adamant the area has always been and still is predominately Millwall. I wasn't having it, I've know West Ham islanders, but I've never lived there.

Does anyone from E14, Millwall, Manchester Road, etc, care to correct me?

Lee,

The Sailing Centre is on Westferry Road mate. I lived opposite in Old Bellgate until August this year.

Depends on what part of E14! I grew up in Poplar and went to school on the Island (George Greens).

On the Island, I'd say it was probably 50% West Ham, 30% Millwall and the rest Spurs / Liverpool/ Arsenal etc

My Dad grew up on the Island on Manchester Rd, (opposite where the Sailing Centre is/was) and all his mates were all Millwall, which went back to the connection with the Docks and the old ground which used to be where Asda is?

They all played for the Ferry House football team in the 70's.

As far as i;m concerbed God put that river reason there for a reason... to keep us and them apart... North of the river is us.. South is them... never found any of the boozers on the Island Wall... but have found some of them very cliquey...

As a young kid lived in Millwall. Cahir Street in one of the block of council fats that are still there, It was a mix of WH and Millwall. My sister is 10 years older than me and she and her mates used to go to both Millwall and Upton Park. This was late 60s.

The Venus mate, always did a lovely T Bone in there.

Had my stag do in Benjys. Forgot all about the Resolute, only ever went in there once or twice. Used the Royal Charlie a fair bit and Callaghans now and again on Chrisp St.

Which steak house fella, The Venus down Bethnal Green Rd or the one under The Londoner (Lipsticks), also did kebabs?

Don’t forget Benjys over the road. Fridays.
Only drunk in dead house couple times and the Res round the corner. (Met there for the millwall Mother’s Day game. Both boozers banged out at 9 in the morning. Was like New Year’s Eve! Haha. Then another mob had walked from CT and all joined up down Poplar high st to the Stn).

But yeh, gettin back, the 80s were ‘appy days.

Didn’t the Hope and Anchor briefly become a ruby sometime in the 90’s?

Dead House was our Thursday Night pub after work. Had some great nights,in there til about 10pm,then off to a steak house before going Mile End Odeon to watch the boxing being beamed back from the states during the Leonard/Duran/Hearns etc era. Great great times to be in your early 20's

Re: E14 - West Ham, Millwall or both
70s/80s a bit more millwall, but as time moved on, more West Ham and few millwall old boys (as someone’s already said).
Didn’t really drink over there (we was stepney. Always seemed cliquey over there. Their own mob.
Remember Jimmy Batten used to organise the karaoke over there when it was all the rage.
Me old man’s mate used to run the Ferry House, way back in the 70s. (Bert).

O1BB - yeh, know the Dead House.
Me cousin worked behind the ramp for a few years.

Yep Hope and Anchor still going. Bit of a flats pub but better than being a poncey boozer like what The Pensioner has become.

I occasionally drink in the Manor Arms in Poplar, they have live music every Saturday daytime.

Used to play badminton at Woolmore St. school, back in the early 70s and go to the “Oak” afterwards before heading home.

Do you know the British Oak in Poplar down Woolmore St?

Good mate of mine's parents had it in the late 70's,early 80's.

The Ferry House (or fairy house as it’s known by locals) ain’t a bad boozer as it goes.
